Department of Public Works Provides Highway 137 Reconstruction Project Update

The Department of Public Works (DPW) announced upcoming reconstruction of a section of Highway 137, spanning from Highway 132 to Pohoiki Road.

The project will enhance roadway safety and reliability for our community.

The scope of work includes:

  • Grading the existing lava rock.
  • Installing a new asphalt concrete pavement structure.
  • Removing and replacing asphalt in areas unaffected by lava.
  • Installing a new 6-inch waterline.
  • Adding roadway signs, striping, and pavement markers.
  • Additional miscellaneous tasks to ensure a successful project.

The project is on schedule, with an anticipated completion date of March 2026. On-site construction is set to begin at the end of September 2024.

To mark the commencement of this work, DPW will host a blessing ceremony for the project’s equipment on Tuesday, September 24, at 10:00 a.m. at Kumukahi Lighthouse entrance (4 Corners) on Tuesday, September 24. All community members are invited to attend this event.
