On Friday, June 3, Governor Ige signed HB2075 (Act 030) which restored part of a previous gun law that was struck down by a federal court last year.
The new law requires the physical, in-person inspection of three categories of firearms that have been identified by county police chiefs as top concerns and threats to public safety. They categories include:
- Guns that do not have serial numbers (also known as ghost guns)
- Guns brought to Hawaiʻi from out of state
- Guns transferred between private individuals
Among the state’s strict gun laws is one that requires people who buy guns to obtain a license and complete a firearm safety course.
Governor Ige also signed a proclamation declaring June 3 National Gun Violence Awareness Day.
