Kīlauea’s 40th Episode Ends After 9.7 Hours

Episode 40 of the ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption ended abruptly yesterday at 6:04 p.m. after 9.7 hours of continuous lava fountaining from the north vent.

This latest episode produced 7.1 million cubic yards of lava during the high fountain eruption with the average effusion rate at approximately 250 cubic yards per second.
The south vent was not active during the high fountain phase. 
All eruptive activity was confined to Halemaʻumaʻu crater within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park

Most episodes of Halemaʻumaʻu lava fountaining since the eruption started on December 23, 2024, have continued for around a day or less and have been separated by pauses in eruptive activity lasting generally at least several days.

Kīlauea Volcano Alert Level/Aviation Color Code remain at WATCH/ORANGE.
