Visitor Dies After Being Pulled from Waters at Lāwa‘i Beach

The male visitor from California who was found unresponsive while snorkeling at Lāwa‘i Beach on Kaua‘i has died.

Bystanders performed CPR, and first responders continued efforts before transporting 56 year-old Gavin Phillips to Wilcox Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy is pending, but foul play is not suspected.

Authorities remind the public to follow ocean safety practices, such as swimming at lifeguarded beaches, using the buddy system, observing conditions, and knowing how to respond to rip currents.
