New Protections Give Nēnē Another Chance to Nest in Liliʻuokalani Gardens

Nēnē nesting season is currently underway at Liliʻuokalani Gardens, with a pair nesting in a protected area.

The female, identified as NTC, previously lost goslings due to abduction, disease and a car accident linked to cat feeding stations.

New regulations will prohibit feeding feral animals on county lands starting January 2026 to reduce disease and predation risks.

DLNR and Hawai‘i County Parks staff will monitor the nesting pair throughout the season, which runs through March.

The public is reminded to keep dogs leashed, avoid feeding feral animals, and observe nēnē from a distance.
