Yesterday morning, Hawaiʻi County Fire Department (HFD) Units were dispatched following a report of an aircraft crash landing after a mayday call came in. Shortly after the call, all communications were lost with the aircraft due to it losing power.
The pilot, and soul occupant of the plane, attempted to land on Kekaha Kai State park road near Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport. After crash landing, he was able to walk away from the aircraft. where HFD personnel treated and assessed injuries and was later transported to Kona Hospital with minor injuries.
It is unknown what caused the engine problems at this time. An investigation is underway.
