Hāwī Transfer Station Remains Closed Through Mid-Week

After an unidentified liquid, later determined to be transformer oil, was improperly disposed of in a chute at the Hāwī Transfer Station, the Hawaiʻi State Department of Health and  Department of Environmental Management are working to safely remove the liquid. There is no immediate threat to the public.
As the oil is removed, the Hāwī Transfer Station will remain closed through tomorrow for safety measures and cleanup. During this time, residents are advised to use the Waimea or Puakō Transfer Stations. It is currently uncertain whether the station will reopen after Wednesday. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
