Big Island D.U.I. Statistics: January 22-28

During the week of January 22, through January 28, 2024, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 23 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident, while  one of the drivers was under the age of 21.

Thus far in 2024, there have been 78 DUI arrests compared with 91 during the same period in 2023, a decrease of 14.3 percent.

The Hawaiʻi County Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 62 major crashes so far in 2024, compared with 68 during the same time last year, a decrease 8.8 percent.

To date, there were three fatal crashes, resulting in three fatalities, compared with two fatal crashes, resulting in two fatalities for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 50% for fatal crashes and 50% for fatalities.
