4.4 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Southeast of Pāhala

Yesterday afternoon, a magnitude-4.4 earthquake occurred 4 miles southeast of Pāhala at a depth of 8 miles below sea level.

The earthquake, which had no apparent on either Mauna Loa or Kīlauea, appears to be the result of faulting on the offshore section of Kīlauea’s Southwest Rift Zone. While the earthquake was felt at Kīlauea’s summit, it did not cause any changes in seismicity or deformation. No damage to buildings or infrastructure is expected based on the earthquake’s intensity

The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory continues to monitor Hawaiian volcanoes for any changes.
