30 Chinese military leaders visit U.S. to repair military ties

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) _ About 30 midlevel Chinese military commanders begin their five-day tour of Hawaii and California today as the two Pacific powers repair their military ties.

The itinerary has People's Liberation Army officers visiting a guided missile destroyer in San Diego, meeting Marines at Camp Pendleton, California and calling on U-S Pacific Command headquarters in Hawaii.

The visit is a way for the U-S to demonstrate its capabilities and alleviate any fears China might have about U-S military might.

U-S Army Lieutenant Colonel Roger Cavazos says the trip may also help Americans gain insights into how Chinese military leaders think through numerous discussions planned with the visitors.

This is the third such visit by Chinese midlevel officers since Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and his Chinese counterparts agreed last October to increase military exchanges.
