HONOLULU (AP) _ The state says Hawaii's generous tax credits for technology companies are working, though solid proof of the credits' benefits is still in the works.
According to Tax Director Kurt Kawafuchi, the state has issued 184 (m) million dollars in credits to Hawaii companies since 2001. The credits must be claimed over five years. And so far, taxpayers have claimed nearly 75 (m) million dollars under the program.
Kawafuchi spoke yesterday to a group of about 200 people at a Hawaii Science and Technology Council luncheon.
He told them he thinks the tax credits have created ``a lot more jobs.''
Identities of the companies benefiting from the credits are kept confidential and the state hasn't been tracking the number of jobs created by the program.
