(Hilo-AP) -- Hawaii County is suing a contractor and engineering firm after sidewalks that don't meet federal requirements were installed in Waimea.
County attorneys say the lawsuits were filed against Goodfellow Brothers and Engineers Surveyors Hawaii.
It could cost more than 100-thosuand dollars to fix the flawed sidewalks, which were put in as part of a five (m) million dollar project to improve Mamalahoa Highway in 1999.
The sidewalks don't meet access requirements under the Americans with Disabilities Act and was brought to the county's attention by John Hartman, of Kailua-Kona, who uses a wheelchair.
According to the lawsuit, the county twice reminded Engineers Surveyors in writing to be sure the sidewalks and curb ramps met the federal disabilities requirements.
But after Hartman's complaint in 2001, the county checked the sidewalks and discovered ``numerous'' violations.
