HONOLULU (AP) _ The attorney of Army First Lieutenant Ehren Watada says his client is willing to accept any type of administrative punishment in place of a court-martial.
The 28-year-old Kalani High school graduate refused to deploy to Iraq last month after researching the war and determining it to be illegal. He is a member of the Army's first Stryker Brigade Combat Team.
Attorney Eric Seitz says Watada is willing to accept a reprimand, fine and reduction in rank instead of facing a court-martial for his refusal.
Seitz says the offer was made to Army prosecutors this week. A pretrial hearing for Watada at Fort Lewis in Washington is set for August 17th.
The Army has refused two offers by Watada to step down as an Army officer and serve in another combat zone, such as Afghanistan.
