HONOLULU (AP) _ The state's acting governor signed into law a bill authorizing a 17.5 (m) million one-time payment to the state Office of Hawaiian Affairs.
The payment is for a partial settlement over ceded lands.
The state finance director, Georgina Kawamura signed Act 178 as acting governor yesterday.
The governor, the lieutenant governor and the attorney general were all on the mainland and couldn't be there to sign the bill.
The money pays for OHA's portion of the public land trust from July 1, 2001 to June 30, 2005.
It represents additional revenues not paid since 2001 that Lingle's administration agrees OHA should share.
Ceded lands are the over 1-point-4 (m) million acres of former crown and government lands held in trust by the state.
The state constitution earmarks a share of revenues from the use of ceded lands for the benefit of Native Hawaiians.
