HONOLULU (AP) _ Governor Lingle has signed into law a package of bills passed by the Legislature to combat identity theft.
Lingle says the bills offer new ways to protect consumers from the fastest growing crime across the nation.
The Federal Trade Commission reports the number of identity theft cases in Hawaii rose 265 percent from 2001 to 2005. On Oahu alone, police report receiving 400 identity theft cases per month.
One bill requires businesses and government agencies to notify consumers if their personal information has been compromised by an unauthorized disclosure.
Another measure, which is known as the ``dumpster diving'' bill, requires businesses and government agencies to take reasonable measures to protect against unauthorized access to personal information when disposing of records.
