Investigations of public corruption up

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) _ Federal agents in Honolulu have investigated 32 allegations of public corruption in the first five months of the year.

That's about as many probes as the F-B-I conducts in a whole year.

Authorities say the number is not high compared to other jurisdictions. But observers say that public perception of the government suffers by the mere appearance of wrongdoing.

Ronald Becker is a professor of criminal justice at Chaminade University and chairman of the criminal justice program.

Becker says the data -- quote -- ``serves as the foundation for extrapolating the misbehavior of one cop to all cops.''

Public corruption is any instance in which a public official uses his position or office for personal, financial or material gain. The F-B-I's Honolulu district also includes Guam, Saipan and American Samoa.

Among the public agencies investigated this year are the Honolulu Police Department, the Kauai Police Department and the Honolulu Liquor Commission.
