HONOLULU (AP) _ Thousands of homeowners in Hawaii are advertising their properties online as private vacation rentals.
The deals have been springing up across the islands as visitors look for alternatives to crowded hotels.
But many operations could be illegal because of a ban on the businesses that took effect in 1989.
Some residents say the rentals are growing out of control.
Kalana Best -- who lives in Kailua -- joined the Save Oahu's Neighborhoods, a nonprofit working to preserve residential areas.
She says her community is being invaded by visitors.
The state Tax Department is investigating 216 rentals and bed-and-breakfast operations in the islands that may violate tax laws.
On Oahu, only one thousand homeowners have a certificate that allows them to rent rooms for less than 30 days. However, a state study found more than two thousand online advertisements for the rentals.
