HONOLULU (AP) _ Hawaii will be joining eleven other states in banning smoking in public places statewide.
Leaders of the Senate and House Health Committees have come to an agreement on a bill to prohibit smoking in public places and places of employment. That includes all bars, auditoriums and employee lounges, as well as from curb to cabin at Hawaii's airports.
The one variety of workplace excluded from the plan is prisons.
Lawmakers are calling the agreement a victory. Previous versions of the bill had passed with an overwhelming majority in both houses.
Legislators are also looking to raise the state tax on cigarettes. Details are still being negotiated between the House and Senate.
