HONOLULU (AP) _ As the 2006 legislative sessions winds down, lawmakers are making final decisions on how to spend 624 (m) million dollars of surplus taxpayers' money.
The current House and Senate drafts of the massive budget bill each proposes spending more than 245 (m) million dollars on state agency programs.
That's a bit more than the 239 (m) million dollars Governor Lingle had asked for at the beginning of the session.
The rest of the surplus could still go to tax relief or to other projects which aren't part of state agency budgets. Or lawmakers could choose not to spend it all.
The biggest target for overall spending this year is education, with about 500 (m) million dollars in surplus cash and other funding slated for Hawaii's public school system.
