HONOLULU (AP) _ Proponents of an abortion bill passed this week by state lawmakers say it only brings Hawaii law in line with federal rulings.
But opponents say the bill goes farther than it needs to and expands abortion opportunities in the state.
State Senator Rosalyn Baker says Hawaii's law allowing abortion has remained untouched since it was enacted more than 35 years ago.
Baker says the law is an outdated statute that needs to be brought up to date.
The bill removes a 90-day residential requirement for women seeking an abortion in Hawaii and a requirement that all abortions be performed only in a hospital.
According to a Senate committee report, those changes are in keeping with U-S Supreme Court rulings that found such rules to be unconstitutional.
