HONOLULU (AP) _ More than one million gallons of raw sewage has been diverted into the Ala Wai Canal since Friday's break of a major sewer line break in Waikiki.
It was the largest of at least a half-dozen sewage spills on Oahu in the past few days caused by heavy rains.
Five of the spills are in Windward Oahu.
Sierra Club Executive Director Jeff Mikulina says that Oahu is using and outdates sewer system which is prone to these types of accidents.
The Waikiki break in the 42-inch main that serves densely populated Waikiki and surrounding areas was discovered Friday morning on Kaiolu Street and stopped Sunday.
It was installed in 1964 and was scheduled to be upgraded next year.
