Oahu crystal meth deaths hit 87 last year

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) _ The number of people who died on Oahu because they were using crystal methamphetamine hit 87 last year _ two more than initially reported in January.

Honolulu Chief Medical Examiner Doctor Kanthi De Alwis says she added two more deaths to the after new evidence in the deaths of two other people.

Ice deaths numbered 67 in 2004. Alwis says the rise is alarming.

One of the newly classified cases was for a man who died because of the toxic effects of crystal methamphetamine.

The other was Terance Lee _ a Honolulu attorney who died when his sports car flew off Pali Highway at high speed and tumbled down the side of the mountain in December.

Tests showed Lee had crystal methamphetamine and alcohol in his bloodstream.
