HONOLULU (AP) _ Mayor Mufi Hannemann is scheduled to return to Honolulu today after studying the Las Vegas monorail.
Hannemann met with officials of Transmax Group who were in charge of the monorail's 650 (m) million dollar financing.
He also met with Bombardier, which developed and operates the system.
Transmax officials say the Las Vegas system is the only rapid transit system in the United States that was privately financed without government funds.
It received funding from hotels, casinos as well as the Nextel-Sprint wireless communication firm.
The system serves as many as 50-thousand passengers a day. Residents pay one dollar per ride and visitors pay five dollars.
Hannemann also went to Washington D-C, where he discussed mass transit with a number of senators.
