WASHINGTON (AP) _ Senator Daniel Inouye says he opposes Samuel Alito's nomination to the U-S Supreme Court because he believes Alito would fundamentally change how the Constitution is interpreted.
Inouye, a Democrat, gave his address this morning from the floor of the U-S Senate.
Inouye says Alito will erode civil rights and abortion rights if his nomination is confirmed.
Inouye expressed concern that Alito would put too much power in the hands of the president and erode the system of checks and balances in the federal government.
Alito's confirmation is expected to be approved because he has received the support of 51 Republicans and two Democrats so far. He would replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.
