WAILUKU, Maui (AP) _ Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa says he wants to get control of four streams from a Wailuku company to meet a growing demand of water on the island.
Wailuku Agribusiness has been diverting water from the four streams to sell it to Maui plantations.
Arakawa says he would first ask Agribusiness to divert some of its waters to other streams. If the company refuses, Arakawa said it could cost about seven (m) million dollars to obtain control of the streams.
Arakawa says increasing water rates on the island could be one way of getting the money.
Agribusiness president Avery Chumbley says the county would also have to buy more than 13-thousand acres of watershed land around the ditches.
He says he offered to sell the land to the county for 27-point-eight (m) million dollars in 2003 and that he is open to negotiations.
