HONOLULU (AP) _ A former Kamehameha Schools official has filed a defamation lawsuit against the school and the headmaster of its Hawaii campus.
Darren Ah Chong alleges he was unexpectedly forced to resign as director of operations at the Keaau campus at a meeting with Headmaster Stanley Fortuna Junior and another employee.
In a lawsuit filed in Third Circuit Court on the Big Island, Chong alleges the school targeted his job when it realized it would suffer a huge budget shortfall at the end of the 2004 fiscal year.
Chong alleges Fortuna told him he was being asked to leave because of poor performance. But Chong claims he had received high marks in an evaluation done three weeks before his dismissal.
Kamehameha Schools spokesman Kekoa Paulsen says the school was not commenting on the case because it involved a personnel matter.
