HONOLULU (AP) _ Using radar equipment along the wall of a landmark Honolulu building, military specialists today quickly located a time capsule buried more than a century ago by King Kamehameha the Fifth.
Archaeologist Larry Conyers with Joint P-O-W/M-I-A Accounting Command says the swift results came as a surprise. The team found the box at the northeast corner of Aliiolani Hale within ten minutes.
The time capsule was buried February 19th, 1872. It's contents include photos of royal families dating back to Kamehameha the Great, Hawaiian postage stamps and a constitution of the Hawaiian Kingdom.
But until now the capsule's exact location wasn't known.
Matt Mattice is executive director of the King Kamehameha the Fifth Judiciary History Center.
He says the capsule won't be removed. Officials just wanted to know where it was.
Knowing the location will help officials protect the capsule during future renovations or natural disasters.
