HONOLULU (AP) _ Matson Navigation Company is raising its fuel surcharge for the fourth time this year.
Hawaii's largest cargo shipper announced today that the fuel surcharge for its Hawaii and Guam-Northern Mariana Islands services will increase 13 percent to 15 percent, effective January first.
Matson's last increase of one and a-half percent took effect October second.
The company announced in March that it would evaluate fuel costs on a quarterly basis, with the fuel surcharge adjusted up or down accordingly.
Dave Hoppes is Matson's senior vice president for ocean services.
He says the upcoming increase is needed because bunker fuel prices have risen over 21 percent in the past three months.
According to Hoppes, the price Matson has paid for fuel has risen 68 percent in the past year.
