HONOLULU (AP) _ A group of volunteer doctors and nurses from Hawaii is in the Federated States of Micronesia to provide surgical care for ailing women on the island of Kosrae.
Doctor James MacMillan the Third said an advance team found 100 women who needed surgery.
But MacMillan estimates his group will only be able to perform at most 30 operations during a ten-day stay.
According to MacMillan, Kosrae only has one operating room, so operations can only be performed one at a time.
He notes Kosrae doesn't have a blood bank. He says it's common practice to have two family members cross-matched to give blood wait outside the operating room in case they're needed.
MacMillan and the other two doctors -- Nicholas Fogelson and Reni Soon -- are affiliated with the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii.
