HONOLULU (AP) _ The state Campaign Spending Commission has referred its two-year investigation of former state Senator Cal Kawamoto to the attorney general's office for a criminal probe.
The commission cited alleged abuses, including the improper transfer of 130-thousand-dollars of his campaign funds to a Waipahu charity that he heads.
Commission executive director Bob Watada says the case involves a gross misuse of campaign funds. He says Kawamoto planned to drain all the assets of his campaign funds.
Kawamoto defended his actions before the commission and accused the commission staff of destroying his political career. He lost his re-election bid last November after 10 years in office.
