HONOLULU (AP) _ The Honolulu Police Department is recruiting a growing number of officers from the mainland.
About forty out-of-state recruits graduated from the H-P-D's academy in February after being recruited in Portland, Oregon two years ago.
This year recruiters are flying to San Diego to test more applicants who want to be a police officer on Oahu.
The department is making the trip after about 600 people showed interest in an online ad the H-P-D posted last month.
Detective David Do says applicants are coming from all over _ from the South, the Midwest, the West Coast and the East Coast.
Chris Kuhn is a native of California who now patrols Waikiki. He says he likes meeting merchants, tourists and locals while on the job.
And he says his children love Hawaii because the climate is always nice.
But he warned people not to come here expecting an office job because being a police officer is hard work.
