KAHULUI, Hawaii (AP) _ Former Maui Mayor James Apana has made an initial move in his effort to regain the office he lost three years ago.
He's resigned as chairman of the Maui County Democratic Party.
Apana says he took the step so he can start to run for mayor.
He was elected to the party post in May 2004. A new chair will be elected August 16th by the Maui County Democratic Committee.
The 43-year-old Apana served as mayor from 1999 to 2002, when he was defeated in an upset by Alan Arakawa. Arakawa is expected to seek re-election in 2006.
Apana's campaign treasury hasn't received any contributions in more than a year. But the most recent report said it contained just over 15-thousand dollars.
