HONOLULU (AP) _ State Representative Helene Hale will be honored Saturday with the opening of a new collection of works in her honor at the Hilo Public Library.
The Helene Hale collection _ International Women of Courage is an anthology of materials including biographies and histories featuring women in America and around the world who have inspired others with their achievements, advocacy, leadership and community service.
The 86-year-old Hale has a long history of public service. She was a member of the former Hawaii County Board of Supervisors, and was the first woman elected county chairman in 1963. The position is now known as mayor.
Hale also served as a delegate to the Hawaii State Constitutional Convention in 1978, a member of the Hawaii County Council, and the state House of Representatives. He currently is chairwoman of the House Committee on International Affairs.
