The Central Pacific Hurricane Center continues to track Hurricane Jimana. As of 5:00 this evening, Hurricane Jimena was located approximately 215 miles southeast of Hilo and was moving toward the west at about 20mph. Maximum sustained winds are measured at near 85 mph with higher gusts.
As of 5pm, the storm was at 18.2 degrees North and 152.4 degrees West. The forecast by the Central Pacific Hurricane Center is for Hurricane Jimena to continue moving westerly passing south of the Big Island early Monday morning.
The Big Island continues to be under a hurricane watch which means that there is a possibility of hurricane conditions (strong winds, high surf, and heavy rains) occurring anytime within 36 hours. A high surf advisory and flash flood watch are also in effect for the Big Island.
Increased surf has been reported along the south east shore of the big island and it is expected to continue to rise throughout the evening.
