Research finds reason behind ocean's biodiversity

HONOLULU (AP) A new study has found evolutionary rules that lead to the formation of new species on land also apply to fish in the sea, accounting for the ocean's great biodiversity.
The research found coral reef fish from neighboring habitats may differ from one another more than they differ from fish thousands of miles away.
That's according to Luiz Rocha of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute and colleagues at Harvard University, the University of Florida and the University of Hawaii.
The finding goes against standard evolutionary theory that holds geographical barriers -- such as mountain building and island formation -- lead to the splitting of one species into two, or speciation.
