HONOLULU (AP) The state Department of Labor is conducting random audits of local businesses to make sure they are providing health insurance coverage to all qualified workers.
Department investigators have looked at 16 firms to make sure they are complying with the Hawaii Prepaid Health Care Act. So far, they have found one employee out of 39 who did not get the entitled health coverage.
Businesses that were investigated included retail shops, restaurants and consulting firms.
The investigations began in February, and Labor Director Nelson Befitel says that after a year, the department should know if any particular industry is prone to violating the law.
The Prepaid Health Care Act states that employees who work at least 20 hours a week for at least four straight weeks and earn at least 542-dollars a month should get health care coverage from employers.
