HONOLULU (AP) _ Senator Daniel Inouye has invited the public to comment on changing a law designed to help Native Hawaiians reclaim sacred artifacts and burial objects from museums.
Critics say the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act is flawed, shows favoritism and needs to be changed.
La'akea Suganuma, president of the Royal Hawaiian Academy of Traditional Arts, says the law has worked well for American Indian and Native Alaskan tribes, but problems have arisen in Hawaii.
Inouye, who is vice chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs until the new session begins in January, held a hearing Wednesday in Honolulu on the 1990 law he drafted and introduced.
The public has until January 4th to submit written testimony, which the committee will use in making suggested revisions.
