HONOLULU (AP) _ The Hawaii State Teachers Association is criticizing state officials for the slow response to the discovery of asbestos at a Windward Oahu School.
Joan Husted, the union's executive director, says she's upset it took six days of teacher complaints before the state closed classrooms at King Intermediate School in Kaneohe.
Husted has advised teachers to see their doctors.
The asbestos was detected in dust caused by sanding and scraping. The exterior work was done at the four-classrooms in Building One in preparation for painting, and the tests were performed after concerns were raised by staff.
The two-story building was evacuated November 12th after the presence of asbestos was confirmed.
Asbestos was used commonly until the 1970s in insulation and fireproofing material. When inhaled, its small fibers can cause cancer and other diseases.
