Hawaii tourism officials expect slower growth

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) Hawaii tourism officials are tempering their expectations for the industry but vowing continued growth.

Hawaii Tourism Authority Vice President David Uchiyama said Thursday the state agency expects 8.2 million visitors to come to the islands this year, followed by 8.4 million next year.

Both figures would be records, but they're lower than initial targets.

Uchiyama says the industry hasn't managed to maintain the same brisk growth trend marked in recent years as economy emerged from recession.

Still, he says growing numbers of travelers from markets like Australia, China and South Korea should help fuel continued expansion. He's also optimistic about travel from the mainland given airlines are adding seats to cities like Seattle, Los Angeles and New York.
