Companies seek more time for incinerator project

By Associated Press

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (AP) Three companies vying to build a waste-to-energy incinerator on the Big Island want more time to prepare proposals.

Mayor Billy Kenoi says three months is long enough.

West Hawaii Today reports Kenoi wants the facility built before he departs in late 2016.

Representatives of Covanta Energy Corp., Green Conversion Systems Inc., and Wheelabrator Technologies Inc. attended a pre-bid conference Thursday with Hawaii County officials.

Company representatives say the October deadline for proposals is tight and better bids will come in if the deadline is extended.

The finalists also expressed concern about whether the Hawaii County Council will approve the project cost.

The incinerator could carry a price tag of more than $125 million over a 25-year contract.

The council killed an incinerator project in 2008.
