Elections officer explains troubled Hawaii primary

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) Hawaii Chief Elections Officer Scott Nago is attempting to explain a problematic primary held in the wake of a tropical storm.

At an Elections Commission meeting Friday, Nago also explained why 800 ballots weren't counted on Maui. He says the problem involved a vendor not following proper procedures.

The primary was held the day after Tropical Storm Iselle made landfall over southeast Hawaii, leading elections officials to close to two precincts in the badly damaged Puna region. Nago says a previous decision to mail those voters ballots was changed to instead hold a makeup primary because of information from the county that roads had become accessible after the storm.

Two politicians who represent Puna are calling for Nago's removal. They also want a re-vote.
