Jury acquits US agent of murder in Hawaii shooting

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) Jurors have acquitted a federal agent of murder in the 2011 shooting death of a man at a Hawaii fast-food restaurant, but they failed to reach a verdict on other lesser charges.

The jury reached its decision Thursday in the retrial of State Department Special Agent Christopher Deedy.

Deedy was retried nearly a year after another jury was unable to agree on a verdict. Judge Karen Ahn declared a mistrial after the jury deadlocked.

Ahn ruled that the current jury could consider a lesser charge of manslaughter. The previous jury wasn't given that option and was allowed to consider only murder.

Deedy says he was acting in self-defense and protecting others when he shot and killed Kollin Elderts during an altercation in a Waikiki McDonald's.

The agent from Arlington, Virginia, was in town for an economic summit but was off-duty when the shooting happened.
