Hawaii governor concedes, says he gave everything

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie is conceding his loss in the Democratic primary for governor to a state senator who promised a more cooperative tone.

The 76-year-old governor said in a speech to supporters Saturday that "Hawaii is everything to me." He says he will campaign vigorously for Sen. David Ige (EE-gay) in his race against a Republican former lieutenant governor and a former Honolulu mayor running for the Independent Party.

Abercrombie reflected on his 40-year Hawaii political career, which began with his election to the state House of Representatives in 1974.

He says "every waking breath that I've taken, every thought that I had before I slept was for Hawaii."

He says whatever his shortcomings are, he has given his all to the people of Hawaii.
