Hawaii Democrats seek unity after dramatic races

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) Hawaii's Democratic Unity Breakfast the day after the primary election is typically a time to set aside differences ahead of the general election.

But Sunday's event was awkward, with the top-ticket U.S. Senate race undecided and the incumbent Democratic governor ousted after 40 years in Hawaii politics.

The two Senate candidates, incumbent Brian Schatz and U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa, largely ignored each another at Sunday's event.

The other election drama was resolved Saturday night, when Gov. Neil Abercrombie pledged his full support to competitor David Ige (EE-gay) after he was trounced by the state senator.

Attention now shifts to a remote area on the Big Island, where voting was postponed in two precincts after the tropical storm. The 8,255 registered voters there are likely to decide the Senate race.
