NASA plans more Kauai tests of decelerator

By Associated Press

LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) A spokesman for NASA says the agency will return to Kauai next year for more test flights of an aircraft that could one day land on Mars.

NASA in June conducted tests of its saucer-shaped Low-Density Supersonic Decelerator.

The Garden Island reports the agency is continuing to test a decelerator and a supersonic parachute that could allow the craft to land heavier payloads or people on Mars.

NASA on June 28 launched the Low-Density Supersonic Decelerator from Kauai's Pacific Missile Range Facility.

Scientists have been analyzing data from the flight.

One video shows the vehicle's parachute, the largest supersonic parachute ever built, ripping apart as it deployed.

NASA says the test was a success despite the malfunction and it has learned from the videos.
