House votes to keep internet tax-free

By 67AM KPUA News

The House has voted to make permanent a moratorium that would prevent Hawaii and six other state and local governments from taxing access to the internet. A moratorium first imposed in 1998 is set to expire on November 1, exposing internet users to the same kind of connection fees that often show up on telephone bills.

States with internet taxes prior to the moratorium had been allowed to keep them, but under the bill passed on Tuesday, they would no longer be able to collect the taxes. The Internet Tax Freedom Act now moves on to the Senate, where its Democratic supporters include Senate Finance Committee Chairman Ron Wyden of Oregon.
