New tobacco ordinance takes effect

By 67AM KPUA News

Hawai`i County has become the first county in the state to raise the legal age to buy tobacco products to 21. A new ordinance that takes effect today, doesnt make it illegal for young people to smoke, but it does penalize retailers for selling products such as cigarettes, cigars and electronic cigarettes to underage customers with fines ranging from $500 for a first offense to as much as $2,000 for subsequent violations.

The measure, sponsored by Kona Councilman Dru Kanuha was passed unanimously by the County Council in November and signed into law in December by Mayor Billy Kenoi.
