Door replacement delays opening of campus building

By Associated Press

HILO, Hawaii (AP) Changes in doors to improve accessibility at a new University of Hawaii at Hilo building cost an extra $230,000 and delayed its opening by about a year.

Director of University Relations Jerry Chang tells the Hawaii Tribune-Herald by email that 23 doors in the new Student Services Building were replaced to meet changes in guidelines of the federal Americans with Disabilities Act.

Chang says the original doors were heavier but compliant with 1991 guidelines.

He says the doors could have been left in place because 1991 guidelines were in effect when building plans were approved.

Chang says the university chose to meet the new standard because UH Hilo has students with disabilities and the original doors would have made their access to the building more difficult.
