Hawaii to aid Philippines school rebuilding

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) Gov. Neil Abercrombie is sending engineers from the Hawaii National Guard to the Philippines to help rebuild a school damaged by a typhoon.

Abercrombie and state Adjutant General Maj. Gen. Darryll Wong announced the plan last week at the Philippine Consulate General in Nuuanu to commemorate Philippine Independence Day.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports the Guard's 230th Engineers will travel to the Philippines at the end of the month.

They will join Guam National Guard units to help the Armed Forces of the Philippines rebuild Marasbaras National High School in Tacloban.

Typhoon Haiyan damaged the school Nov. 8. The cost of repairs is estimated at $1 million.

Philippine Consul Roberto Bernardo says students are studying in tents until repairs are completed.
