Solomon says whales/turtles no longer endangered

By 67AM KPUA News

A Big Island lawmaker says Hawai`is humpback whale and green sea turtle populations have rebounded sufficiently for the federal government to remove them from the endangered species list.

State Senator Malama Solomon says the number of whales in Hawaiian waters has grown from 1,600 in the early 80s to more than 21,000 and their numbers now pose a threat to the fishing industry. She said the feds should take green sea turtles off the list for the same reason.

Earthjustice Attorney David Henkin says Hawai`is sea turtle population hasnt fully recovered, and the jury is still out on whether the whale population has stabilized. Solomon said de-listing might not be necessary if the federal government can craft protections for the fishing industry.
